Our Approach

the FUNCTIONAL Approach

Encouraging lifestyle changes in patients is a physician’s greatest responsibility. Most medical conditions are not just diseases; rather they usually are always symptoms of imbalances in one or more areas of the body. Not feeling well as a result of a medical condition motivates a person to seek medical care. Too often, symptoms are treated instead of the actual cause of the condition. For example, oftentimes the symptoms of pain or high blood pressure are treated instead of working simultaneously to resolve the cause of them.

Body imbalances can be defined as excess weight, unusual fatigue or weakness, irritability, headaches, depression, trouble falling or staying asleep, chronic pain, hormonal problems, digestive discomfort, etc. If left untreated many of these imbalances in the body can lead to more complicated diseases or illness.

Here is a perfect example:

Pain syndromes sometimes persist because of extra force exerted on bones and joints caused by excess weight. We know the spine is designed to carry the body's weight and distribute the load during rest and activity. When excess weight is carried, the spine is forced to take on the extra burden, which may lead to structural compromise and damage. Unfortunately, the physical and sometimes emotional pains felt from excess weight aren’t the only concern. The longstanding symptoms of excess weight often go unnoticed until it's too late. Excess weight can put us at risk for a number of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and some types of cancer. The sooner we address the cause of excess weight and treat it, the better chance we have at preventing unwanted illness.

At transformyou, we believe the best approach to healing involves identifying, treating, and, if possible, removing the source of the imbalance which causes discomfort in one’s health. One of the primary interventions in removing the imbalance involves creating an environment in which the body is provided with the best opportunity to heal itself. Besides physical injury, imbalance and illness can be the result of such factors as poor diet, aging, stress, improper care of the body, and other lifestyle over indulgences and excesses. The goal is to provide the basic framework for better health. Striving for health when one has poor lifestyle habits is self-defeating,  education and treatment are needed until an overall better state of health can be achieved.

INTEGRATIVE AND Functional MEDICINE

The terms “integrative medicine” and “functional medicine” often are used interchangeably, but the two are different. Integrative therapies are used together with conventional medicine. For example, you may take opioids to manage your day-to-day pain and use acupuncture to help manage flare-up episodes. Functional medicine can be used in place of conventional medicine. For example, using a special diet to treat your arthritis instead of using pharmaceutical medications.

Functional Medicine is most often practiced by physicians who are looking to get to the root cause of disease and dysfunction. One of the main tenets of functional medicine is “treat the cause.” This approach is easily overlooked by some physicians who help patients deal with symptoms only, regardless of duration.  Overall health and wellness from a functional medicine perspective includes several aspects of treatment that can elicit a physical, emotional, and physiologic changes in a patient’s life.
